Dear North Families,

It has been awhile! Hopefully, you are enjoying a restful and relaxing summer!

As a school and as a district, we have been working diligently on how to best prepare for the upcoming school year!

Some helpful information to share:

Mode of learning

The district will be sending out something early this week that will ask families to make a commitment for their child as to which mode of learning that you want to pursue for the start of the current school year. As you know by now, there is the intent to start the year with a hybrid mode of learning that will see students in school part of the time and participating in remote instruction part of the time. While you will be provided with the opportunity to change your decision periodically throughout the upcoming school year it is essential that we know definitively the plan of our families for the start of the year.  Please watch for this information coming soon.

Update on WPS Reopening Plans

Please note that Dr. Brand, Superintendent of Schools, will be hosting an online meeting this Thursday, August 6 at 6:30 p.m. to provide parents/guardians with specific updates and information regarding our reopening of schools. Please watch for the link to this meeting coming from his office soon.

Message from Mrs. Jane Ferrara (North Intermediate School Nurse)

The MA Department of Public Health mandates that all 4th grade students have a current Physical Exam on file in the school Health Record.  The exam must be performed by the child’s physician or other primary care provider.  For students in the 4th grade, this can be done between June 2020 and June 2021.  Fifth grade students who did not have an opportunity to provide a documented Physical Exam may send it to the School Nurse now through email or postal service. Please remember that the American Academy of Pediatricians recommends that every child continue to receive routine vaccinations during the COVID-19 outbreak.  Well-child visits and vaccinations are essential services and help to make sure children are protected.

North info

  1. As the above commitment information will certainly inform buildings on the number of students in a classroom and the way in which we may have to place students, there will be a delay on the posting of class lists for the 2020-2021 school year.Originally, we had planned to share the names of students’ classroom teachers via Aspen in early August.Understandably, we are still determining placements and cohorts at this time.We will share classroom teacher information as soon as is feasibly possible.

  2. Our Assignment Notebooks have arrived! On time! This will help our students develop organizational skills and help with goal setting. Here’s a sneak peek of the cover:

    image of assignment notebook cover

  3. School supply lists have been organized by grade level, not individual teacher. We are finalizing those lists in order to ensure that students will not be sharing any supplies. If you are in need of any financial support with regard to school supplies (backpacks, lunch bags, etc.), please feel free to let us know, as we are working with several local organizations and generous donors.

  4. If you are new to the North, please follow us at:

The Northside PAC also has a very helpful Facebook page! For district information, please visit our new Wilmington Public Schools website at

This will not be an ordinary year! Stay connected! We will make it through together!

Sincerely,

Ms. Christine McMenimen

Dear North Families,

That's a wrap!! Thanks for all of your support over the past three months! We have all, most definitely, improved our technology skills in order to stay connected!

A special SHOUT OUT to Mrs. Farnham, our school counselor, and Ryan Malyar, the new executive director at WCTV for their support with The North Show! Check out our talented students when you have some down time! So proud of our students (and Mrs. Farnham) for putting themselves out there and taking a risk. Very brave! There's also a special message from Mrs. Quigley, who is retiring after 22 years of teaching in Wilmington (I misspoke in the video).

https://wilmington.vod.castus.tv/vod/?video=8b78fc93-201a-4b7e-a4d1-e1ab369d08c3

Please take a LONG look at the attached Summer 2020 Reading and Art Activities!! There is nothing required for incoming 4th or 5th graders, but there are recommended reading lists/titles. Such a variety of books, authors and perspectives--I can't wait to get reading myself! This list will also be posted on our North web page all summer.

Please be reminded per last week's Monday Morning Memo that report cards will be posted in Aspen on June 23rd. Next year's classroom teacher information will be posted in Aspen in early August. School supply lists (by grade level) are delayed pending the decision on what school will look like for all of us in September.

We hope that the summer brings you and your families-- good rest, good times and good health.

Feel free to stay in touch if you need anything.

As I write this, on Sunday evening, June 14th, Flag Day—I will sign off for the summer--

With liberty and justice for all,

Ms. McMenimen

P.S. Hope to see you at the “reverse parade!!” Staff from the North side of town (Wildwood, Woburn St., and North) will be in place from 12:15pm - 2:00 pm. Enter Carter Lane via Boutwell and exit onto Shawsheen Avenue.

Dear North Families, Memorial Day

We hope you enjoyed a relaxing Memorial Day Weekend. It is hard to believe that we have come to the end of May! Many of you have been asking about retrieving students' belongings from their lockers. We are planning our process and procedures for this task, so please save the dates of Thursday, June 4th and Friday, June 5th for pick-up (a detailed schedule by classroom will follow).

In the meantime, we need some items from you-- if you are driving/walking/bicycling by the North sometime this week! Some students may have:

Books from their teacher's classroom library

Books from the North Library

Social Studies textbooks

We will have two carts out in the front of the building this week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday! There is no need to return Math or Science books as those items are consumables and will not be used next year. Please do NOT leave Math or Science books on the carts.

The carts will be labeled for the various items to be placed and will be located out front all three days between the hours of 8:00AM and 3:00PM.

Additionally, our Lost and Found rack will be out front In case you have been looking for certain items of clothing that you have not seen for a while!!

We appreciate your help with this task, as we are going to begin the process of preparing all classrooms for summer storage and cleaning.

THE NORTH SHOW is coming along! Thank you for all student submissions! We really need to give a SHOUT OUT to Mrs. Farnham for putting so much time and energy into this positive project! We really do need some good news to focus on these days!

Enjoy the week and please let us know if you have any questions about the drop-off of the above-mentioned items. It will be important to practice social distancing and to wear masks when dropping off, as others may be arriving or leaving at the same time.

Have a good week and keep in touch!

Sincerely,

Ms. McMenimen

Dear North Families,

You're not stuck at home, you're safe at home. Keep up the great work! We know it is not easy balancing it all! We appreciate all of your efforts and your energy!

If your child is struggling with motivation, with regulating emotions or just the overall life changes right now, please reach out! We are here to support, offer strategies and suggestions and just listen!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. We have a partner relationship with McLean Hospital for professional development and teacher training. They recently shared a learning opportunity for parents and caretakers. To understand that you are not alone and that many of the children are most definitely feeling the same way. They are likely exhibiting some different behaviors or not sleeping well. This is a resource that was shared from the Office of Student Support Services. Please consider watching one of the videos, one is for children and one is for teens.

We will continue to reach out to families to support student engagement in remote learning. We can make phone calls, provide one to one Zooms, or create a paper packet of assignments if printing is an issue. Some students have created their own weekly check-lists to stay organized. One suggestion that I mentioned to students during Lunch Bunch is to utilize their assignment notebooks to keep track of class Zooms, assignments and class codes for different sites! It is something familiar, and it would be just like in school where they track what is coming up for each week.

WPS meal distribution is still happening @WHS every Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9:30AM-11:30AM (although not next Monday due to Memorial Day).

Don't forget students and teachers are having a little fun with THE NORTH SHOW! Students can show off a talent or share some good news and positivity by submitting a video to Mrs. Farnham—see attached flyer.

Lunch Bunch is for 4th graders only this week! Same day. Same link. Same time. 12:30! It has been a joy to connect with the students for 30 minutes each day! They make us smile, make us laugh and make us think!!

We are here for you! Let us know what you need!

Sincerely,

Ms. McMenimen

P.S. North Specialists' Newsletter is attached. We will also email the students this newsletter.

Dear North Families,

We hope you had a great weekend and enjoyed a lovely Mother's Day with social distancing, Zoom, or an abundance of family time. Although the Annual WPS Art Show is not happening in the same place this year, the Visual Arts teachers are working on a District Digital Art Show to display the many talents of our kids! They are continuing with the hearts in the hopes to create an Elementary Digital Heart Quilt. All K-5 students can send a picture of a heart—it can be a drawing, a sculpture, a painting or a found object! You can create your Heart Artwork outdoors or indoors using any materials or objects you can find.

- Drawing (pencil, pen, colored pencil, oil pastel, anything else you have)

- Painting (watercolor, tempera, anything else you have)

- Sculpture (paper, cardboard, anything else you have)

- Found objects (candy, leaves, buttons, toys, anything else you have)

Upload a picture of your heart by May 22nd to Ms. Mac's Google Classroom or email to kathleen.mcnamara@wpsk12.com so it can be added to the collaborative Digital Hearth Quilt in time for the Art Show.

Several families have asked about students being able to retrieve personal belongings from classrooms, desks and lockers. Please know that we are working on a plan that allows a schedule to accomplish just that. I would expect that to happen sometime in the first two weeks of June.

We hope you are healthy and well! Please let us know if you need anything. We are here for you!

Sincerely,

Ms. McMenimen

P.S. The Specialists' Newsletter is attached for this week! These are options and choices for students. Please remember students can read, be creative, get in some physical activity, and listen to/play music. Please keep academic work to no more than 2 hours each day.

P.P.S. Lunch Bunch is for Grade 5 this week!

Dear North Students and Families,

It is finally feeling like spring!! We are continuing to reach out in various ways—phone calls, Zooms, texts, emails, etc. If you feel that your child needs support, a pep talk, or just someone to listen—please let us know.

We want our students to continue their efforts with their remote learning, but we need them to have balance. So, please gauge how they are feeling about themselves and their schoolwork and make your family decisions accordingly.

This week is Staff Appreciation Week! We will take time to recognize the work of our North Squad—teachers, educational assistants, cafeteria workers, nurses, counselors, administrative assistants, CARES staff, and custodians. All of them are teachers in many ways to our students! They miss the kids terribly! If you have a moment this week, please send a SHOUT OUT to show your appreciation for them!!

Lunch Bunch this week is for Grade 4. Please see the attached schedule--same time as usual for each class!

Attached you will find the North Specialists' Newsletter for the week of May 4-May 8.

Take cake and stay safe,

Ms. McMenimen

April 27, 2020

April Shows

Dear North Families,

There have definitely been many April showers, so we really must be hopeful for May flowers SOON! We know that life now is very challenging for all of us. You are doing great! Your children are doing awesome! We are so proud of them for all that they have learned to do over the past six weeks—how to Zoom, how to send/receive emails, and how to complete assignments through Google Classroom. It truly is incredible to see how they have adapted, adjusted and acclimated to our new normal. Certainly, there have been bumps along the way. We understand that not everything is perfect. But, that is okay. Allow yourselves, as caretakers, and the kids some grace. You are doing the best that you possibly can under the circumstances! Please continue to reach out to our North Staff to ask for guidance and support, both academic and emotional.

This week, we hope to connect with as many 5th graders as possible through our Lunch Bunches with Mrs. Farnham, our School Counselor and Mrs. Ferrara, our School Nurse. These are opportunities for students to see and interact with classmates and familiar adults. Please see the attached schedule for the 12:30 Zoom Lunch Bunches.

As you are now likely aware, we will not be returning to school to finish out the 2019-2020 school year. This is very sad for all of us. We will continue our efforts to engage all students through our WPS Remote Learning Plan, and we hope to strengthen our connections with our entire school family—students, parents and caregivers, and staff. The safety and well-being of students, families, and staff has been and must continue to be our top priority. Additional guidance has been provided by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education about content standards most critical for student success in the next grade level and about engaging all students in remote learning. You can expect and update from our District Leadership Team in early May. We want to hear from you, if you need anything to support your children!

We know that many of you are essential workers who are on the front lines every day! We need you to stay safe, and we salute your brave and selfless efforts in the fight against COVID-19. We are sending you much love and many virtual hugs as you display such courage in your daily work!

Please remember that breakfasts/lunches are being distributed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30AM-11:30AM at Wilmington High School. If you have any questions regarding Chromebooks, please email chromebooks@wpsk12.com.

We miss you all in our parking lots and our hallways!! Of course, we miss our students most of all because it is our honor and privilege to watch them learn and grow!

Sincerely,

Ms. McMenimen

April 20, 2020

Dear North Families,

I wanted to stay consistent with the Monday Morning Memo today; however, no need to log in to Google Classroom or complete assignments as today is a holiday.

If students want to connect socially during Lunch Bunch (and for your planning purposes), I have attached the schedules for the next two weeks. The Lunch Bunches are the same days and same times (with the exception of Ms. Tener's class which moves to tomorrow afternoon at 1:00PM). This week is for 4th graders, and the week of April 27th is for 5th graders!

Today, on Marathon Monday, my mind always thinks of #BostonStrong. Please see the Virtual Quilt in progress with Ms. Mac's art classes. Students can send a picture of a heart—it can be a drawing, a sculpture, a painting or a found object! This collaborative project fosters creativity, community and caring! The hearts will be pieced together to create a community quilt to show our essential workers how much they are appreciated! Working together toward a common goal for a good cause exemplifies our Wildcat Circle of Values:

Community—Inclusivity—Respect—Collaboration—Leadership--Engagement

Hearts

Shout out to the Specialist Teachers for having their weekly newsletter ready for me today!

Have a great week!

Sincerely,

Ms. McMenimen
